The Desert Thread Mission Statement is: Desert Threads was established to promote the appreciation of quilts through fellowship, education and community service projects. It is this sentence that guides our chapter in everything we do.
Desert Threads was formed in 2018, averaging 50 members. We welcome new faces and all levels of skills and interest. Everyone is invited to attend meetings as a guest and hopefully consider joining us.
Members are currently meeting at:
Phoenix Room at Cottonwood
25630 S Brentwood Drive
Sun Lakes, Arizona
Although the meetings are held in Sun Lakes we have members from many of southeast Phoenix metro and surrounding communities. Our meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 9:30 AM. We start gathering at 9:00 for coffee and light refreshments and social time. Our meetings have a business and an educational portion or fun activity.
Our speakers have covered a variety of fiber arts. We strive to bring talented and often well known artists and teachers to our meetings. Local vendors have presented new product information. We enjoy meetings at which we get acquainted with games or parties. Some of the activities available for members to participate in are classes, block exchanges, guild challenges and of course Show-&-Tell.
Our Community Service projects have been popular activities. Our first year, we created place-mats for Neighbors Who Care to distribute with their meal service at Christmas time. We also have fun creating “Fidget Quilts” for memory loss patients and “Fidget Books” for autistic children. We are making twin size quilts for US Vets transitioning from temporary housing to permanent housing.
We have generous members who contribute time and materials. We have obtained grants to help purchase materials for our charity work and support education programs. We have scheduled sewing days hosted by quilt shops and other locations.
We would love to have you visit any meeting and hopefully join us as a member, regardless of age, residency or quilting experience. We look forward to growing, in order to better serve our community through the shared love of quilting and quilting fellowship.
